First, let me start off by explaining that there are different categories of the percentage of gray hair that each person fits into. Less than 25%, Mild 25%-50%, Moderate 50%-75%, Manifest 75%-100%, or Complete 100%. You can have an area of your head that has a higher concentration of gray hair than the rest of your head, and in that situation, you will fall into two categories.
Choosing the right hair color for your particular needs depends on your percentage of gray hair and if you have areas on your head where it's more concentrated.
Often, people with less than 25% of gray will opt for a gloss that will cast a hue of color over the gray hair to make them less shiny. The color softly fades over time and does not create any harsh lines of demarcation.
Clients dealing with 25-50% of gray hair benefit most from a highlighting and low lighting technique that incorporates multi-dimension to create a very soft grow-out and create depth where needed. Clients in this category often aren't ready to let their white hair take the stage, but instead of fighting it, they lean in to enhance it.
Clients with 50% or more gray hair typically opt for adding depth into their hair with low lights while allowing the white hair to stand out and be showcased in its glory.
Clients with 75-100% gray hair can be candidates for gray blending, but oftentimes it may result in more maintenance than what they are looking for. At this level of gray, a conversation on maintaining and enhancing the gray without adding color is often my first suggestion.
The journey of gray hair blending is unique to everyone. Finding the right stylist to show you all the possibilities will unlock so many opportunities.
